against NZ in 1981.
Ricky Walford was the competition's leading
point scorer in 1989, Country Origin rep in 1989 and was
named as a fringe candidate in the Australian squad in
1990.
Represented Aboriginal side on tour of Tonga
in 1990. Scored a try in 1992 grand final and also played
in the 1993 grand final.
A wonderful finisher and classy goal kicker,
Walford went on to surpass 200 club games and score 972
points for the club in all grades, second only to Graeme
Langlands.
A great club man and enduring figure, Ricky Walford retired
in 1995 but made himself available during Saints' turbulent
period of early 1996.
Always a contributor, Ricky Walford continued
with community work in the St George district.

victim to a judiciary 'crackdown' on head high tackles
and was cruelly sent off and suspended for four matches.
Walker struggled to adapt to city life leaving
Sydney in 1994 but returned to play with Easts in 1995-98.
He returned to Rugby Union in 1999, going

The last captain-coach of the Golden Years,
Ian Walsh represented Country, NSW and Australia while
playing with Western Division's Eugowra.
Australian Test captain in 1963-64, Walsh
took over from Arthur Summons to win the Ashes. He captained
Australia again against France (1964), NZ (1965) and retained
the Ashes in 1966.
Walsh played in five Grand Final wins and
was given the task of captain coaching St George in 1966,
a job no one wanted. Against the odds, Walsh led the Dragons
to their 11th straight Grand Final victory.
A St George legend, Walsh went on to coach
Parramatta before becoming a successful columnist and
commentator and then a NSW selector.

Following a try in the corner to winger Owen Campbell,
Nigel Watts is credited with kicking a sensational 'pressure
goal' to win the Cup Tie semi-final at Erskineville Oval
in 1944, Saints defeating Souths 15-14 after fulltime.
Surrounded by supporters, Watts lined up the difficult
conversion attempt on the sideline before landing the
match-winning goal. Amidst scenes of wild jubilation,
Watts was carried from the field on the shoulders of supporters.

Hailing from Grafton NSW, Danny Wicks was graded with
the Dragons in 2004.
A member of the 2005 Dragons Jersey Flegg premiership-winning
side, Wicks was called up into the first grade following
injuries and a suspension which saw no less than eight
Saints players sidelined. Wicks crashed over for a try
on debut to help his side to a hard-fought 22-16 victory.
Wicks backed up in similar fashion in round 12, scoring
again to make it two tries in his first two matches.
In round 14 of the same year, Wicks made a memorable rampaging
run of some 70 metres, bursting through the Penrith defence
from his own 30m line and fending off several cover defenders
along the way. It would have rated as one of the best
forward tries in living memory. But Wicks was eventually
reeled in, just one metre short of the try line.
In 2007, Wicks was unable to repeat with any consistency
his standout performances of his debut year. The Grafton
junior played 12 games in 2007 (0 points) before signing
with the Knights for 2008. |

Following injury to Marrk Gasnier, Richard Williams
was called up into the first grade squad to fill the
five eighth position.
In 2007, Williams scored five tries in his eight matches
with Saints, sometimes bringing fans to their feet with
some long range runs to the line.
An electrifying prospect, Williams was also regarded
as an enigma by some, both on and off the field. He
was released by Saints during the 2007 season and linked
up with the Panthers, playing four more first matches
(1 try) before being relegated to the lower grades.

Billy Wilson's exploits and reputation for
toughness are legendary.
Called 'captain blood' because of the amount
of blood he spilled for the game, Wilson was sent off
in the 1953 final and then played the 1954 semi final
with a broken arm and gashed eye. He eventually played
in six premiership victories with St George in 1956 &
1958-62.
A St George junior, Wilson was graded at
lock before taking on the job as captain-coach of Picton
at only 20 years of age.
Returning to Saints, he developed into one
the most uncompromising prop forwards to ever play the
game.
With just 12 men on the field, Wilson was
moved to the centres in the 1956 Grand Final and although
out of position, this is regarded as one his finest displays.
Wilson became captain in 1962 and was sent
off that year's Grand Final.
Went on to captain Australia in 1963 and
then led Norths to the 1965 final despite breaking a leg
in the previous season.
Billy Wilson announced his retirement in
1966 but returned to play with Norths the following year
to assist the injury ravaged club.
Unquestionably one of the toughest men to
ever play Rugby League, Billy Wilson passed away after
suffering a stroke in March 1993.

Originally from Wide Bay, Wittenberg played
for Toowoomba before shifting to Theodore, Queensland.
Wittenberg linked up with St George
in 1968 but not before the QRL blocked his attempt to
move to Sydney, thus forcing him to sit out the 1967
season and missing out on that year's Kangaroo tour.
Former
Australian and Dragons captain-coach Graeme Langlands
remembers John Wittenberg as one of the toughest forwards
of his era.
"He was very, very tough," said Langlands.
"He lost half a hand in an accident with farming
equipment before he came to Sydney but it didn't worry
him. He told me that when he resumed playing after the
accident the tops of the finger stumps would bleed during
matches. He didn't let it worry him."
John Wittenberg made 53 appearances for Saints, scoring
four tries, and played six Tests for Australia.
One
of the toughest rugby league forwards of the modern
era, John Wittenberg died in November 2005, aged 67,
after a suffering a heart attack while working on his
Wauchope property.

disrupted by injury, the former Canberra skipper played
just 18 games in 2007, but brought plenty of experience
to the young Dragons squad.
Woolford's contract with Saints extends into 2008, the
year tipped as the veteran's final season in first grade. |

'Rookie of the Year' in 1979, Wynn was a
noted attacking back rower who performed tremendously
in the 1979 Grand Final victory.
Also played in 1985 grand final. Went on
to play briefly with Wests before retiring at the end
of 1992.
Made a cameo appearance for Saints in February
2001 as winning captain in the 'OzTag Legends of League'

Originally a junior soccer player in the
Illawarra region (his father Bob represented Australia
in soccer), Craig Young joined Rugby League with Corrimal
and toured England with the undefeated Australian Schoolboys
side of 1972.
At 20 years of age, Young linked up with
St George in 1977 and played in the Grand Final victory
of that year with the Harry Bath ('Bath's Babes') coached
side.
Selected for Australia in the 1978 Kangaroo
side, Young was named 'player of the tour'.
An inspiration to his team mates, Craig
Young captained St George to its 15th premiership in 1979.
Played in the 1985 grand final loss and
in his last year, he was captain when Saints won the 1988
mid-week Panasonic Cup.
Had a brief stint as St George coach in
1990 before being replaced by Brian Smith.

A no-nonsense workhorse and excellent support player,
Dean Young is never far away from the action in both attack
and defence.
Young missed his first game in almost three years when
he was suspended in round seven of 2006 (his previous
missed match was round 9, 2003).
A surprise omission from the Country Origin squad of 2006,
Young was eventually named 18th man in the NSW squad for
State of Origin III.
A season ending knee injury in round 25 saw Young side
lined during the 2006 finals.
Following treatment and surgery over the off-season, Young
returned to play in the opening three rounds of 2007 before
suffering another season ending injury.
Young is contracted with Saints until 2010.
