Captain of the 1922 Maori touring team.
Originally lured to Saints by George
Carstairs, 'Brownie' later recalled coming over
to Sydney on the steamer, Marama and held with
pride throughout his life that he played with St George.
A popular personality, Paki was regarded as the first
'outsider' to be imported into Sydney football.
In 2006, Mr Tim Manukau of Huntly (NZ) writes:
Brownie was very influential identity in the development
of Maori Rugby League within the Waikato Region, as a
player, administrator and an ambassador for the sport.
In 1922 he represented the "Rest of Australia"
against the Kangaroos and scored a memorable try in that
match at the Sydney Cricket ground.
Brownie assisted Tonga Mahuta in founding the Taniwharau
Rugby League Club in Huntly, the very club that produced
Kiwi league players such as Andrew Berryman, Don Parkinson,
Ricky Muru and most recently Wairangi Koopu and Lance
Hohaia. |

Described by the media as a 'nippy' half back, Jack Parsons
was a star in the St George second grade in the early-mid
1920s. He played in four first grade games in 1926 before
retiring to look after family and an engineering business.
In The St George Call (1926), the enigmatic 'Forward'
described in detail Parson's kicking skills and speed:"Parsons,
who for his first game in First Grade performed exceptionally
well. He was easily the best back."

until 2007.
At the conclusion of season 2007, Payne signed a two year
deal with Wests Tigers. |

At the conclusion of 2007, Adam Peek had made 113 first
grade appearances, scoring seven tries (28 points).
Peek agreed to terms with the Sharks for 2008. |

Following another stint in the UK (with Widnes), Peters
returned to Australia and signed with the Wollongong Bulls
in the Tooheys League for 2006.
Peters was also named in the Dragons side for the Premier
League (second grade) pre-season trials in 2006.

One of the greatest post-war backs to play
the game, Pidding was a winger in Saints grand final win
in 1949.
Country rep scored a record of 27
points (1t + 12g) in 1950.
He scored 228 pts (22 matches) on the 1952-53
Kangaroo tour which was second only to the great Dave
Brown who scored 258pts (32 matches).
The club's top point scorer in 1950 (116pts), 1951 (200pts),1952
(97pts) and 1953 (115pts), Noel Pidding scored 698 points
in all grades, 598 in first grade, posting a club record.
During the first Test v Great Britain (SCG)
in 1954, he scored an Australian record of 19 pts (1t,
18g).
Returning to Maitland (1954) before playing with Easts
(1955-56), Noel Pidding was rated by Norm Provan as the
greatest winger he had played with or against.

A first grade rookie, Poore predominantly played Jersey
Flegg (third grade) in 2003.
Winner of the 2004 'Paul McGregor Award' for Most Outstanding
Player Achievement.
Poore cemented himself into the first grade squad in 2005,
making 24 appearances.
In 2006, Poore's consistency was proven with 25 first
grade appearances.
In 2007, Poore made 19 appearances and is regarded as
the run-on prop alongside front-row partner Jason Ryles.
In 2008, Poore made another 19 appearances.
Justin Poore is contracted with the Dragons until 2009.

The prop come second row forward was an integral part
of the St George first graders. Originally from Tamworth,
Monty also played for Southern Division club, Thirroul.
He also played with Wests in 1955 before finding a home
with St George in 1957.
Playing in one of the best packs in the
world, Porter played in six Grand Final wins and was unlucky
not to play for Australia. Went on to captain Cronulla
in 1967 and become the Shark's club secretary. In 1983,
he became one of the original members of the nine man
NSWRL board of Directors.

In 1963, he and Arthur Summons (Wests) were

trophies of the 1990s and into the 21st century.
An unofficial ambassador of Rugby League,
Norm Provan is widely regarding as one of the game's legends.

Rated as the greatest lock forward to ever
play the game.
Holds the record for most Test appearances
against France (12).
In the second Test at Swinton and in front
of 30,843 people, Australia thrashed Great Britain 50-12.
Dubbed the 'Swinton Massacre', Australia scored 12 tries.
Johnny Raper played a blinder, destroying the Brits and
having a hand in 9 tries but ironically was unable to
score for himself. The dominance of Raper prompted former
player and highly respected League commentator Frank Hyde
to describe it as the greatest 80 minutes of football
by any one player.
An inspirational team player and superb
defender, John Raper played in eight Grand Final wins.
Played out his career with Kurri Kurri in 1972.
Went on to become one of the game's administrators
and national selector.

A spirited performer, Rasmussen continued the proud club
tradition of producing class hookers.
Missed season 1968 due to National Service.
Played in 1971 grand final.
By 1973 he was competing with Russell Cox and Steven Edge
for the hooking spot giving the club enormous depth in
this position.

represented Qld and Australia before joining Saints and

A strong and bulky forward, Rasmussen played in five Grand
Final wins (1962-66).
Went onto to captain-coach Brisbane Souths and again represented
Queensland late in his career.
Died prematurely from a heart attack at Greenmount near
Toowoomba, in 1978.

Originally from Rockhampton, 'Rocket' Rod
Reddy became one of the best attacking forwards of his
generation, matched only by his aggressiveness in defence.
Played a big hand in the 1977, 1977 replay
and 1979 Grand Finals.
Coached Cumbria (UK) and then reserve grade
coach to Brian Smith at St George.
Was appointed first grade coach in 1996
but walked out on Saints to take up an ill-fated coaching
appointment with Super League's Adelaide Rams. Reddy was
sacked and the Rams folded in 1998.
He later became assistant coach to Brian
Smith at Parramatta.

Once a cult figure with his 'Ned Kelly' head of hair,
Reynoldson was a crowd favourite in Newcastle. But 2007
saw a year of controversy, including threats legal action
against his former club. Reynoldson claimed restriction
of trade against the Knights when they refused to name
him in first grade, thereby denying the veteran forward
an automatic extension on his contract worth $196,000.
Reynoldson eventually linked up with Saints for one season
in 2008 and proved his worth with some impressive running
just wide of the ruck. He scored a try in his opening
round with the Dragons.
After a career of football in NSW and Victoria, Reynoldson
has retired from the NRL at the end of 2008, and has moved
back to Brisbane in his home state of Queensland. In 2009,
he has been tipped to take up an offer to play for the
Wattles Warriors in the Toowoomba competition. |

In his excellent book, 'Saints: The Legend Lives
On' Ian Heads reports that Rice was an inspirational
footballer who in his 50th first grade match for St
George was knocked out while playing against Souths.
In the days well before reserve players or interchange,
he was taken to hospital in a bad state. But he refused
to stay, argued with medicos and was back at the ground
to see out the finish.
Played in the 91-6 thrashing of Canterbury in 1935.

taking a kick - often mimicked by the crowd
Fast off the mark and an exciting dummy half runner, Riddell
has scored a number of trademark tries by barging over
from close range.
Club top point scorer in 2001 with 130 points
(6t, 53g).
Was top scorer for the club again in 2002 with 129 points
(10t, 44g, 1fg) despite being sent off twice during season,
earning eight weeks on the sideline.
Gained the attention of selectors when named on the 2002
Kangaroos 'train-on' squad but was not selected in final
side.
Was the club's top point scorer again in 2003 with 166
points (7t, 69g) in a year that was marked by rumours
of weight and discipline problems. But Riddell answered
his critics by playing all 24 games and steering Saints
to victory in their final match of 2003 against the Broncos.
Riddell's consistent stand-out performances saw him selected
for City Origin in 2004.
Salary cap restraints and a high demand for Riddell saw
him sign with Parramatta for 2005.

Champion centre, played most of his career with the Cronulla
Sharks. Signed with Saints in 1983 in pursuit of his personal
quest to have grand final success. Played magnificently
in the 1984 final despite going down to Parramatta and
was unfortunately unsuccessful in the Reserve Grade grand
final a week later.
Career was shortened by injury when he returned to the
Sharks in 1985 only to have his jaw broken in the opening
match against Canterbury. A court case for assault against
Canterbury's Mark Bugden resulted.
Went on to coach Queensland and Darwin before becoming
an administrator at Cronulla.

Steve Rogers passed away suddenly on 3 January 2006 after
suffering a heart attack.
Media report 3/01/06:
Former Cronulla Sharks and Australian rugby league great
Steve Rogers has been found dead in his unit in Sydney's
southern suburbs.
Rogers, 51, was the chief executive of the Cronulla club
and had an outstanding career as a player with the Sharks
and the Australian rugby league team. The gifted centre
played 199 Games for Cronulla between 1973 and 1982 with
a farewell season in 1985.
He scored 1255 points for the club during those years
including 82 tries and 502 goals. In the intervening years
Rogers played with St George, featuring in 25 games. His
representative career was no less impressive, the skilful
back featuring in 19 games for NSW and 21 Tests for the
Kangaroos.
Considered one of the greatest outside backs the game
has seen, Rogers formed a devastating centre combination
with Parramatta great Mick Cronin when they played for
the national side. Rogers' son Mat was a former player
with the Sharks, also representing at state and national
level before making a successful move to rugby union in
2002. |

Queensland.
Nicknamed
'Kandos' after the NSW cement-producing town, Ryan became
fearless competitor in RL and has been rated as one
of the toughest men to play the game.
Ryan was a Queensland amateur Boxing Champion
and trialed for the 1960 Olympics.
A dual international and RU convert, Ryan
played for the Wallabies and the Kangaroos. Played in
seven Grand Final victories for St George.
In 1967, as capt-coach of Canterbury,
he indirectly brought an the end to the Dragons' premiership
run.
Later became a practising Lawyer, NSW
state politician and president of the Players Association.
In 2004, Kevin Ryan suffered a heart attack and collapsed
at Manly beach. Unable to recall details of the event,
Ryan was in a coma for three days before making a recovery.

the American 'All Stars' in 1953.
A prolific try scorer, Tommy Ryan scored 24 tries in 20
matches whilst on tour with the 1952/53 Kangaroos. He
played in the 1956 and 1957 Grand Final victories and
was the competition's leading try scorer in 1956 (19 tries)
and 1957 (26 tries, in just 19 matches); the latter standing
as a club record until 2001 when Nathan Blacklock scored
27 tries for the season.

2001, 2003 & 2005.
One of the best props in the game, Ryles suffered a series
of injuries in 2003 before undergoing a shoulder reconstruction
in July.
He recovered to make a successful return to first grade
in May 2004, and was selected for NSW in State of Origin
3.
In the same year, Ryles developed his offloads to near
perfection and gained selection for Australia in the 2004
Tri-Nations series.
In 2005, Ryles played all three State of Origin clashes
for NSW. He was again selected for Australia Kangaroo
tour of NZ, UK and France, playing in all five Tests during
the Tri-Nations including the Tri-Nations final. Ryles
also played in the one-off Australia v France Test match
in Perpignan.
In July 2008, an in form Ryles was controversially sent
off by referee Gavin Badger in Saints' 26-0 loss to Melbourne.
The incident provided further 'confirmation' amidst claims
the firey front rower had been unfairly targetted throughout
his career by referees. In the furore that followed, Ryles
escaped suspension and Badger was dumped to the lower
grades.
Jason Ryles departed Saints at the end of the 2008 season
after being signed by French club Les Catalans in the
European Super League. The deal is worth a reported $AUD
1.7million for three years.
