On the eve of the 2013 season kicking off, the Newcastle Knights have signed Travis Waddell on a two-year contract. The 23-year-old hooker played 53-games for the Canberra Raiders prior to training with the Knights during this pre-season. Waddell played in the Knights first trial match against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Coffs Harbour and also lined up in his fourth All Stars match in February. “We are delighted to have secured Travis’ signature for the next two years,” CEO Matt Gidley said. “With this season being Danny Buderus’ last, it will be great to have someone with Travis’ experience working alongside Danny, Matt Hilder and the host of young hookers we having coming through our system. “Travis has a big future ahead of him and we can provide the best environment for him to reach his potential.” Waddell is expected to be named in Wayne Bennett’s Round 1 team following a recent thumb injury to Hilder, which will sideline him for approximately one month. “It is unfortunate to have both Matt and Danny unavailable, but we are fortunate we had Travis train with us in the pre-season and we are confident he will be ready to go for Round 1,” Gidley added.
